Three-quarters of the season is in the books! The current situation is simply an exaggerated version of what we saw at the mid-point five weeks ago. Cory Puffett has been on quite the winning streak, and has been particularly dominant over the past five weeks. If not for him, Stephen might be arguing he's had the best stretch of games in the league's history. Meanwhile, Rich has not had the scoring success he did earlier this season, but the schedule has benefited him enough to keep him alongside Stephen and well clear of the remaining five managers.
Meanwhile, Sam, Sean, and Eric can no longer even claim to be mediocre. Yet, they remain deadlocked in a three-way dogfight for the last available playoff spot. And thanks to their poor performances, Alex and Cory Frontin continue to hold on to a sliver of hope for a playoff berth, though the combination of matchups between the five teams makes that a nearly-impossible feat for the latter of the two thanks to Alex's strong win this past week.
Cory has already clinched his playoff spot. Stephen and Rich can join him this week.
Stephen will clinch his division with a win or tie in his Game of the Week tilt against Rich. He can also clinch with a loss if Sam loses or ties against Cory Frontin. Meanwhile, if Sean loses or ties against Alex, Stephen will clinch at least a wild card spot even if he loses to Rich and Sam beats Cory.
Rich has some work to do to get back into the race for the AOA West, but he can clinch a playoff spot this week if he wins or ties against Stephen or if Sean loses or ties against Alex. If Rich loses and Alex beats Sean, Rich can still clinch if both Eric and Sam lose or tie against Cory Puffett and Cory Frontin, respectively.
We'll start this week's recap the same way we did in Week 5 and Week 10, this time with a look back at team stats through the first three-quarters of the season. You can use those link to see how the teams were faring in these categories at this season's previous two checkpoints.
Players of the Week
Catcher - Will Smith, 9.80 points (Sam Martin)
1st Baseman - Spencer Torkelson, 9.20 points (Stephen April)
2nd Baseman - Jose Altuve, 14.45 points (Cory Frontin)
3rd Baseman - Eugenio Suarez, 6.65 points (Alex Mayo)
Shortstop - Willy Adames, 11.85 points (Alex Mayo)
OF - Aaron Judge, 15.35 points (Alex Mayo)
UTIL - Michael Busch, 15.70 points (Rich Blorstad)
SP - Zack Wheeler, 28.00 points (Stephen April)
RP - Andres Munoz, 12.75 points (Rich Blorstad)
Jose Altuve had a very impressive week go to waste in Cory's lineup. He's won four Paul Goldschmidt Awards in the past seven weeks, one more than Ketel Marte thanks to this week's performance.
Zack Wheeler, meanwhile, was absolutely the player of the week. His 28 points are the most any player has scored in a week, breaking the previous high of 25.75 points by Hunter Greene back in Week 3, when Eric had more than one healthy starting pitcher in his lineup. Wheeler now has two of the top three single-week scores of the season.
All-time H2H: Rich leads series 3-0
The game of the week truly came down to pitching, and it was a wasted opportunity for Eric to seize control of the fourth playoff spot with just a quarter of the season left to play.
Eric and Rich played dead even offensive ball this week, with Rich claiming an advantage of just one-twentieth of a point. Eric’s pitching staff, then, must have had an advantage considering their perfect 0.00 ERA, right?
For the second time in four weeks, Eric’s staff set a new AOA record for most innings pitched without giving up an earned run. Unfortunately, once again that number was well short of 20; so, despite Rich’s pitchers posting an abysmal 5.95 ERA and an equally poor 1.535 WHIP, the volume of his 42.1 innings pitched provided him with a 13-point advantage on the mound.
Eric's top scorer: Lucas Erceg, 11.05 points (4 relief appearances)
Rich's top scorer: Michael Busch, 15.70 points (6 games)
All-time H2H: Cory leads series 9-5
Sam's top scorer: Bryan Woo, 11.10 points (1 start)
Cory's top scorer: Matthew Boyd, 18.20 points (2 starts)
All-time H2H: Stephen leads series 2-1
Sean's top scorer: Robbie Ray, 12.65 points (1 start)
Stephen's top scorer: Zack Wheeler, 28.00 points (2 starts)
All-time H2H: Alex leads series 8-5
Cory's top scorer: Jose Altuve, 14.45 points (6 games)
Alex's top scorer: Aaron Judge, 15.35 points (7 games)
A much-needed victory helped Sean re-took the #4 spot from Sam in this week's power rankings thanks to the highest losing score in the league. Meanwhile, Alex entered the chat, leapfrogging Eric and announcing his bid for the AOA's final playoff spot.
Cory Puffett leads the power rankings for an AOA-record 44th time.
Cory Frontin, meanwhile, is at the bottom of the power rankings for the 29th time in his career.
