The big news from the AOA this week actually comes from a week prior. Week 4 saw a matchup between Alex Mayo and Eric Meyer end in a tie, with both managers scoring 89.10 points. An early-week stat correction turning an ROE for William Contreras to a hit on the final day of the matchup was the only stat correction affecting their game, and it resulted in a boost of 0.60 points to Eric's total, giving him the win.
I don't typically go back and update our writeups after the week has ended to include the occasional stat corrections that come through, but this week I did since it was such an important one. You can check out last week's writeup to see not only that game update, but the team stats and the accurate Power Rankings following Week 4.
Because this week concludes the first quarter of our season, before we get to the Week 5 recap, let's take a look at how our managers are stacking up against one another across a number of statistics.
Players of the Week
Catcher - Salvador Perez, 6.85 points (Alex Mayo)
1st Baseman - Paul Goldschmidt, 6.05 points (Sam Martin)
2nd Baseman - Kristian Campbell, 6.75 points (Stephen April)
3rd Baseman - Alex Bregman, 11.35 points (Stephen April)
Shortstop - Francisco Lindor, 9.80 points (Sam Martin)
OF - Jarren Duran, 11.15 points (Rich Blorstad)
UTIL - Oneil Cruz, 10.80 points (Alex Mayo)
SP - Hunter Brown, 23.05 points (Sam Martin)
RP - Lucas Erceg, 12.45 points (Eric Meyer)
Perez put a stop to Cal Raleigh's three-week run at the top of the Mike Piazza Award leaderboard. Raleigh finished second in scoring at the position this week.
Paul Goldschmidt won the award named for him for the 15th time in his career and the first time since Week 15 of the 2023 season.
Every single player this week is a first time winner of their respective awards, at least for the 2025 season. Only Rich and Sam have previously had players win awards their players earned this week. Kyle Tucker won the Mike Trout Award for Rich in Week 2 and Framber Valdez won the Bobby Witt Award for Sam in the season opener.
All-time H2H: Sam leads series 10-1
In a matchup that was never particularly close, Sam never trailed and outscored Alex in five days out of the seven-day matchup. One of the two days he lost, he did so by less than 2 points.
While Sam held a moderate advantage on offense, outscoring Alex by nearly 9 points, it was on the other side of the ledger Sam really did his damage. With 7 pitcher starts to Alex’s 3, he overcame a 2-5 disadvantage in relief appearances for the week, with his staff outscoring his opponent’s by nearly 37 points. It was a dominant performance for the reining AOA champion, who desperately needed this win after having lost every game since his season opening victory.
This was the 30th time in AOA history the game of the week featured the highest scorer for the week, and the fourth time it also featured the lowest scorer.
Alex's top scorer: Carlos Rodon, 12.00 points (1 start)
Sam's top scorer: Hunter Brown, 23.05 points (2 starts)
All-time H2H: Series tied 2-2
Sean's top scorer: Spencer Schwellenbach, 14.65 points (2 starts)
Rich's top scorer: Brandon Pfaadt, 19.20 points (2 starts)
All-time H2H: Cory P leads series 12-2
Cory P's top scorer: Shane Baz, 11.85 points (1 start)
Cory F's top scorer: Luis Castillo, 11.10 points (1 start)
All-time H2H: Stephen leads series 3-1
Eric's top scorer: Lucas Erceg, 12.45 points (3 relief appearances)
Stephen's top scorer: Alex Bregman, 11.35 points (7 games)
This week's power rankings saw almost no movement, just a swap between Sam and Eric's positions after Sam led the league in scoring for Week 5.
Rich earned his 7th career #1 power ranking and fourth of the season.
Cory Frontin, meanwhile, is at the bottom of the power rankings for the 19th time in his career, passing Andrew Perez for the second most in AOA history, three fewer than Sean Kennedy's record 22.
Note: MLB issues stat corrections up to 7 days after games. These corrections will be applied to games, including those that have been completed, but these articles will not necessarily be updated with those stat corrections.
