The NBA season kicks off tonight, and I will be writing weekly recaps for the Washington Wizards all season! I hope to cover all 82 games, discuss team and individual efforts, and observe week-to-week improvement from developing players. This will keep me engaged with the Wizards all season, and hopefully will provide some value for readers as well.
Recaps will drop every Tuesday just before we record The Sportsballers Podcast, so check the site for a new article or tune in to the show to stay updated!
Since the season hasn't quite gotten under way, I'll provide a general preview of this team and its expectations for 2025-2026.
I will admit this is a daunting endeavor because of the Zards' current state, but Washington has a new front office and a collection of young talent that should give the fanbase some optimism that the organization is at least pulling in the right direction.
We will need to have a measure of patience as the Wizards have 10 players currently rostered who are 22 years old or younger. While many of these young men have displayed potential, the harsh reality of NBA basketball is that kids don't win a whole lot of games, and I would expect nothing different this season.
The Wizards' current over/under win total is 19.5, which is tied for the lowest in the NBA and would suggest that the Wizards are facing another season near the top of the lotter.
The Wizards chose to move on from Jordan Poole in the offseason and acquired CJ McCollum. McCollum has been a perennial 20+ ppg guy for a decade and will certainly have opportunities to get shots up this year.
In addition, the Wizards added Khris Middleton late last season when they traded away Kyle Kuzma, and he provides a championship presence as a former All-NBA selection and 2021 NBA champion.
Neither of these players are exactly franchise cornerstones at this point of their careers, but they're still solid professional basketball players who will keep the games watchable while the younger guys find their way.
While vets like McCollum and Middleton will likely lead the offensive push early on, the Wizards have several younger players to keep an eye on this year.
Alex Sarr and Bub Carrington are coming off of strong rookie campaigns, and both figure to be full-time starters this season. The Wizards also have Tre Johnson, their 2025 lottery pick, who has shown an impressive offensive game early on in his professional career and will earn plenty of rotation minutes as the Wizards look to develop him.
The slight elephant in the room among these young players is Bilal Coulibaly, who is starting the season injured. Kyshawn George and Cam Whitmore will likely take Coulibaly's minutes while he's out, and both have shown promise in the preseason.
With BIlal heading into his third year, he will need to show significant growth on offense if he wants to be a part of this team's future.
The Wizards start their season on the road, taking on the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night. Then they'll head to Dallas to play the new-look Mavericks on Friday.
They'll make their home debut on Sunday against the Hornets to wrap up the week.
Enjoy the hoops everyone! See ya next Tuesday.
