I’ll be honest, in all the excitement leading up to Week 1 I totally forgot to write a preview of the first six matchups of our season. You can check out my recap of Week 1 for details from those games.
As we head into Week 2, we have a lot of pending coaching risks if lineups remain as they are. Let’s dive right into this week’s slate. As a refresher, coaching risks are based on FleaFlicker projections.
Stephen leads all-time series 5-4
In our only game of Week 2 between undefeated managers, Eric and Stephen face off coming off Top 3 scoring weeks.
Stephen (1-0) led the AFL in scoring with more than 135 points last week, thanks in large part to Tyreek Hill’s monstrous outing against the Chargers. Eric (1-0) was led by Austin Ekeler, who had 164 scrimmage yards and a touchdown in Week 1 but is nursing an ankle injury. It’s unclear how serious the injury is. He missed practice Wednesday for an unrelated personal matter.
From an injury standpoint, the line should probably sway further in favor of Stephen. While his current lineup features no injuries, three of Eric’s players are questionable for Week 2. Joining Ekeler on that list are Jaylen Waddle (oblique) and Darren Waller (hamstring). Should Ekeler or Waddle be scratched on Sunday, Eric’s best pivot is Breece Hall, who is questionable himself with a knee injury.
If the projections pan out for all current lineups, this could be the second week in a row Stephen beats the AFL’s #2 scorer.
Current Coaching Risks
Stephen currently has Jahmyr Gibbs (proj. 10.55) in his starting lineup ahead of Javonte Williams (proj. 11.04).
Eric has no coaching risks based on his lineup and FleaFlicker projections as of Thursday morning.
Cory leads all-time series 9-4
Both Sean (1-0) and Cory (0-1) have Top 6 projected point totals coming into this game. With Sean favored, that sets Cory up for a possible second consecutive unlucky loss to open the campaign.
Sean finished fifth in scoring in Week 1. His top offensive player was Tony Pollard, who scored two touchdowns en route to a 22-point performance. His top scorer overall was Philadelphia’s defense, which had a field day while their offense took the afternoon off against New England. The Eagles had two takeaways including a pick-6 to go with three fourth down stops and as many three-and-outs, totaling 24.62 points.
Cory had to face Tyreek Hill and Christian McCaffrey last week, so he lost despite scoring the second most points in the league. His leading scorer, Aaron Jones, had 127 scrimmage yards and a pair of scores, but he pulled up on the second touchdown and is now questionable for Week 2 with a hamstring injury.
Sean has a pair of injuries to watch in his lineup, as well. Davante Adams (foot) and Pat Freiermuth (chest) are both questionable. Sean will have to make a decision regarding the Muth, who plays in the later Monday night game. He doesn’t currently have another tight end rostered.
Current Coaching Risks
Sean currently has Daniel Jones (proj. 16.78) slated to start over Brock Purdy (proj. 17.22).
Cory has replaced Mike Williams (proj. 9.60) with Jordan Addison (proj. 745), who plays tonight against Sean’s Philly defense.
Anthony leads all-time series 4-2
While both managers have some depth pieces nursing injuries, their starting lineups as they stand are fully healthy.
Anthony (1-0) comes off a Top 6 scoring week. Just over 38% of his total came Sunday night from the Dallas Cowboys defense. That unit had 10 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including seven sacks, three takeaways, a blocked kick, and a pair of defensive touchdowns. They also forced two three-and-outs, had two fourth down stops, and deflected eight passes. It was one of the most dominant defensive performances in league history and earned Ant 39.42 points.
Week 1 was not as kind to Alex (0-1). If the Cowboys defense had only been good instead of legendary, Alex might have outscored Anthony, so don’t write him out of this game, even with the Cowboys facing an Aaron Rodgers-less Jets team.
Alex was led by Kirk Cousins and his 18.02 points in Week 1. It was a bit of a ho-hum performance. He threw the ball well but also turned the ball over three times in a three-point loss to Tampa Bay. Now he has to face the Eagles in prime time so he’ll need some of his skill position players to step up.
Current Coaching Risks
Anthony has two coaching risks as his lineup currently stands. He has Zay Jones (proj. 7.24) in his lineup ahead of Michael Thomas (proj. 8.01) and at kicker he has Jake Elliott (proj. 10.58) going tonight instead of Nick Folk (proj. 12.77) Sunday afternoon.
Alex also has a pair of coaching risks. He is starting Rashid Shaheed (proj. 7.50) over DeAndre Hopkins (proj. 10.00) and Kendrick Bourne (proj. 7.19) over Najee Harris (proj. 11.34). Hopkins is currently questionable with an ankle injury. If he doesn’t suit or his projection decreases significantly prior to 1 p.m. on Sunday, starting Shaheed would no longer be a coaching risk.
Evan leads all-time series 3-1
If Evan (1-0) and Alex (0-1) had faced off in Week 1, the result would have been almost exactly the opposite of the current spread.
Evan finished seventh in scoring, walking away with a lucky win after scoring 98.39 points. Four of his players scored 5.2 points or less, but he did get a few strong performances.
His top scorer was the Jacksonville Jaguars defense with 24.11 points. They got after Indianapolis’s rookie quarterback, taking him down four times for sacks. They forced three turnovers, not including their four fourth-down stops, and they also forced five three-and-outs.
On the offensive side, Evan was led by Justin Jefferson, who had 150 yards on nine receptions. He didn’t find the end zone and only half of his catches went for first downs or he would have broken the 20-point mark.
On Alex’s side, he still had an outside shot of a victory heading into Monday Night, but an absolute dud by Josh Allen sunk that possibility and left Alex with 95.52 points total. Stefon Diggs still managed a pretty good game, catching 10 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown.
Heading into this week, the biggest injury to watch on either side is Mark Andrews (quad) for Evan. If he’s inactive, Evan will either have to activate Luke Musgrave from his taxi squad or pick up Dawson Knox to avoid a coaching risk.
Current Coaching Risks
Alex currently has two coaching risks with Tyler Higbee (proj. 6.39) starting over Evan Engram (proj. 6.51) and Kadarius Toney (proj. 6.08) surprisingly still in his lineup ahead of Gus Edwards (proj. 6.89).
Evan also has two coaching risks as his lineup currently stands. He picked up Joshua Kelley (proj. 5.59) off waivers and has him starting ahead of D’Andre Swift (proj. 9.05) and he has Odell Beckham (proj. 7.34) ahead of Brandin Cooks (proj. 7.76). Cooks is currently questionable with a knee injury, in which case Beckham would no longer be a risk if current projections stick.
Brandon leads all-time series 9-4
With the lowest O/U at just 176 points this week, there’s a good chance the Week 2 David Carr Award winner comes from this game.
It’s a bit surprising to see Brandon (1-0) with the lowest projected total after he finished Week 1 fourth in scoring. Travis Kelce was inactive, so he had to pivot to Juwan Johnson.
While he certainly had some performances to forget, he also had massive games from Brandon Aiyuk and the Jets defense. Aiyuk caught all eight of his targets for 129 yards and two scores, earning him a higher DYAR total than Tyreek Hill, even if he scored almost 10 fewer fantasy points.
Meanwhile, Andrew (0-1) finished 10th in scoring. He lost points from Seattle’s defense and his top scorer, Matthew Stafford, only got him 16.48 points after throwing for a cool 334 yards but no touchdowns.
The good news for Andrew is that his roster is fully healthy. Brandon, on the other hand, has to keep an eye on Travis Kelce’s availability as he works his way back from the bone bruise in his knee that kept him out of the NFL’s 2023 season opener.
Additionally, he may decide to grab a kicker to replace Graham Gano, who missed two field goals (one blocked) in Week 1 and is nursing an injury listed as an ankle but called a calf by Brian Daboll.
Current Coaching Risks
Andrew has a couple of coaching risks based on his current lineup. He has Chris Godwin (proj. 9.61) in a FLEX spot instead of Jamaal Williams (proj. 10.83). He also has Seattle’s defense (proj. 0.35) instead of the Patriots (proj. 1.87). Unfortunately, he put New England’s defense in an IR spot last week and they’re not eligible to return until Week 4, so the only way to avoid this risk would be to add and start the New York Giants defense (unless a better one is dropped before Sunday).
Brandon also has a pair of coaching risks right now. He has George Pickens (proj. 8.41) in his lineup ahead of Khalil Herbert (proj. 9.13), and he has Nico Collins (proj. 7.88) starting instead of Puka Nacua (proj. 8.61), who he just spent 45% of his FAAB to pick up.
Will leads all-time series 7-5
With the biggest spread of the week, this would be quite a turnaround for Will (0-1) if he can bounce back from a historically low-scoring Week 1 performance in which he scored just 64.95 points, almost 12 fewer than William (0-1), ironically enough.
Jalen Hurts was far from the biggest disappointment in Week 1, but it’s never good when your quarterback only manages 13.27 points and is your highest scorer. In all, only three players topped double digits in Will’s Week 1 lineup, and his tight end, Chig Okonkwo, lost him points as he garnered just two targets, caught neither of them, and was penalized five yards.
While William was 12 points the better in Week 1, he finished only one spot ahead of his Week 1 opponent in the league’s scoring rankings. He also had only three player with 10 or more points, but at least his top scorer got up to 17.50 as Bijan Robinson had six catches on six targets, 83 scrimmage yards, and a touchdown.
As the two Williams prepare for the 13th meeting of their career, James Conner (calf) is the injury to watch. If he isn’t available for Massimini, he’ll need to pivot to Rachaad White (who FleaFlicker believes should be in his lineup right now, anyway).
Battle doesn’t have as much to watch, but he’ll be without Kenneth Gainwell (ribs) tonight and he’s got at least three more weeks to get through without Cooper Kupp (hamstring), who is on both his and the Rams’ short-term IR.
Current Coaching Risks
Will has two coaching risks at the moment. He has DJ Moore (proj. 8.51) in his FLEX instead of Rachaad White (proj. 11.41). He also added rookie 49ers kicker Jake Moody (proj. 10.40) instead of Vikings kicker Greg Joseph (proj. 12.24) to start this week after dropping Chris Boswell.
William also has two coaching risks right now. He currently has Justin Fields (proj. 17.07) in at quarterback instead of Tua Tagovailoa (proj. 18.04) and he has Dameon Pierce (proj. 11.66) in at FLEX instead of James Cook (11.69). Projections do sometimes change during the week, so we’ll see if Cook’s projection is still higher when their respective games kick off Sunday at 1 p.m.
Week 2 kicks off from Philadelphia tonight as the Eagles host the Vikings. With the Eagles defense seeming to be a plug-and-play option this year and a lot of great fantasy weapons on both offenses, there should be a lot of action for our league. Good luck to all our managers in Week 2!
