We’ve played seven weeks, and after this week we’ll have seven weeks to go. Thus, this marks the midpoint of the 2022 fantasy season.
Four managers have separated themselves from the field. Sean Kennedy and Alex Mayo are fighting for AFL East supremacy, tied at 6-1 and with a three-game cushion in both the division and on all wild card contenders. Cory Puffett and Brandon Saunders are each 5-2, lead the AFL Central and AFL West divisions, respectively, and have two-game cushions on their division rivals.
Things can still change, and we’ll have a little more clarity on the playoff picture after Week 9 when every manager will face the lone division opponent they have yet to face. But there will still be plenty of opportunity for that playoff bracket to change over the final six weeks as we play three more non-division games and then our divisional round robin to close things out.
This week the Kansas City Chiefs and the LA Chargers are on bye, and that figures to hurt Brandon Saunders (Mahomes and Kelce) and William Battle (Ekeler) more than any other manager. We’ll have to see if their opponents can take advantage. Let’s get to our previews!
Eric leads all-time series 8-4
The bye weeks won’t influence this matchup with only Isiah Pacheco and Skyy Moore unavailable for Eric, but injuries could hamper Anthony.
Josh Jacobs and Amon-Ra St. Brown are both questionable. Jacobs popped up on the injury report on Wednesday with a foot injury. He’s been the RB4 in our league after scoring at least 30 points in each of his past three games, finding the end zone six times in that span.
The Sun God, meanwhile, reportedly did not suffer a concussion on Sunday, so he’s expected to play this week but still has to progress through the final steps of the concussion protocol due to new guidelines surrounding potential head injuries this season.
On Eric’s side, the biggest concern is Darren Waller, who returned to practice this week but is still nursing a hamstring injury and hasn’t scored a fantasy point since Week 4. It would be a coaching risk, but it might be worth considering a pivot to Evan Engram if Waller doesn’t practice in full before the week is out.
Anthony is currently a 7-point favorite, largely on the strength of his three-headed monster of a running back corps with Jacobs, Jones, and Kamara.
Eric should have an advantage at quarterback, but we’ll have to wait a while to know if it will pan out that way. Tom Brady will kick things off for Anthony on Thursday night while Eric will have to wait until Monday night for Joe Burrow’s contribution.
Current Coaching Risks
Anthony chickened out of a coaching risk at the last minute in Week 7 and swapped Terry McLaurin out of his lineup for Brandin Cooks. FleaFlicker says he should do it again; we’ll see if Anthony sticks to his guns and leaves the Washington receiver in the lineup this time.
Eric has Michael Carter in his second FLEX spot, but FleaFlicker seems to be concerned that James Robinson will take a portion of Breece Hall’s vacated carries this week and says Eric should start Jamaal Williams this week, even with D’Andre Swift off the injury report.
Sean leads all-time series 7-5
Things definitely do not look good for William this week. Sean is favored by a ludicrous 35 points!
This is one of two repeat matchups we have in the AFL this week. The two faced off in Week 5 and Sean won by 25, taking advantage of two starters finishing in the red for William while enjoying a pair of 20-point performances from Davante Adams and Dameon Pierce.
We should have a good idea concerning how much of an opening William will have to even the season series after tonight’s matchup between the Ravens and the Bucs; Sean has two players currently slotted into his lineup who are in tonight’s game. He’s hoping Lamar Jackson will get back to form; the Ravens quarterback accounted for 12 touchdowns in the first three games of the season and has just three touchdowns combined in the last four.
We’ll see if Sean has a second player tonight. Gus Edwards has been limited in practice by a knee injury and could be forced to sit due to the short week.
William has his own injuries to keep an eye on this week. T.J. Hockenson popped up on Wednesday’s injury report as a DNP and DK Metcalf, who is feeling better and did participate in Wednesday’s walkthrough, is likely not going to practice this week and figures to be a game-time decision at best for Sunday’s late-afternoon tilt against the Giants.
Current Coaching Risks
William currently has Nyheim Hines slated into his RB spot, but with D’Andre Swift off the injury report for the first time in weeks, FleaFlicker says he should be starting in William’s lineup. If Metcalf is active on Sunday, the platform suggests plugging him in for Olamide Zaccheaus, otherwise Nico Collins (who is also questionable) will be the suggestion.
Sean has the Denver Broncos defensive unit in his lineup right now and the New York Jets on his bench, but FleaFlicker thinks the two should be swapped as the Jaguars offense is currently allowing the fifth fewest fantasy points to opposing defenses in our league.
All-time series tied 5-5
Brandon still has to figure out his tight end situation. He put in claims for exactly the guys he should have, Mike Gesicki and Irv Smith, but got neither of them when Wednesday waivers processed. He should have put a claim in for Greg Dulcich yesterday but did not.
Instead, Brandon still has Travis Kelce, who is on bye, as his starting tight end with nobody on his bench to pivot to. He’s already potentially facing a similar issue at the quarterback position with Patrick Mahomes on bye and Ryan Tannehill yet to practice this week due to an ankle injury.
Thanks largely to all that, Evan opens as a 23-point favorite in this game as he gets Cooper Kupp and Dallas Goedert back from their bye weeks. He’ll be without Mike Williams, who expects to miss at least a month with an ankle injury of his own.
This is a crucial game for both managers. Brandon would love to hold his two-game advantage in the AFL West through the season’s midpoint while Evan, the defending AFL champion, is already three games out of both his division lead and the wild card, leaving him very little room for error with just eight games left on the schedule.
Current Coaching Risks
Brandon currently has both Carolina Panthers running backs in his starting lineup. FleaFlicker says keep Foreman and bench Hubbard for Jakobi Meyers. It’s technically not a coaching risk to leave Travis Kelce in his lineup and take the goose egg, but FleaFlicker recommends Brandon put in a waiver claim for Juwan Johnson.
Evan has Wan’Dale Robinson set to go on Sunday afternoon, but our platform currently recommends he start Allen Lazard if the Green Bay wide receiver is active.
Alex leads all-time series 2-0
The AFL power rankings leader opens as a 21-point favorite in this battle between first and worst. We’ve certainly seen trap games work in the favor of the worst team in the AFL, but with all of Alex’s Buffalo Bills players back from bye, this might not be an addition to last list.
Will is most hurt by the Chargers bye week as he’ll be without Justin Herbert, the AFL’s QB10. He’ll instead of starting our league’s QB30, Kenny Pickett.
Alex will know exactly where he stands by the end of Sunday Night Football. William will be out of players at that point and he’ll know exactly how many points, if any, he needs from Nick Chubb and Evan McPherson on Monday night to secure his seventh victory of the season.
Current Coaching Risks
Will should start James Conner for Garrett Wilson if the Arizona running back is active on Sunday, according to FleaFlicker. The platform’s projections also suggest he should have added and started the Seattle Seahawks defense instead of the Minnesota Vikings, who he claimed and won on Wednesday.
Alex has several coaching risks based on current lineups and projections; we’ll see how many of these he carries into Sunday. According to FleaFlicker he should (1) start Dalton Schultz for Dawson Knox if the Cowboys tight end is active, (2) started Corey Davis (Q, knee) instead of Allen Robinson, (3) start Tyler Bass over Evan McPherson, and (4) swap the Indianapolis Colts defense into his lineup in place of the Buffalo Bills.
Cory leads all-time series 8-4
In the other repeat matchup of the week, Cory opens as a 22-point favorite to defend his narrow Week 5 victory, in which he needed a combined 54.14 points from Jalen Hurts and the 49ers defense, plus a half-point stat correction against Andrew’s defense, to eke out a win by less than half a point.
Cory hopes for better production this week from his team, which has scored at least 100 points in every game except for that Week 5 contest.
Jaylen Waddle’s status remains a question mark for Cory’s team as the Dolphins receiver continues to nurse a shoulder injury. Andrew, meanwhile, will be keeping an eye on Ezekiel Elliott, who seems closer to doubtful for Sunday than his current questionable designation indicates, and Deebo Samuel, who has a hamstring injury that significantly hampered him Sunday and has kept him from practicing so far this week.
Andrew will also be without his top scorer from a week ago, JuJu Smith-Schuster, due to the Chiefs bye week. He’ll be hoping for a sizable lead from Mike Evans and Justin Tucker’s Thursday performances before Travis Etienne kicks off Cory’s scoring on Sunday morning in London.
Current Coaching Risks
Cory decided to swap kickers this week and it looks like he’s back to Matt Gay, his kicker for the first five weeks of the season. FleaFlicker agreed with his decision to cut McLaughlin, but the platform recommended that he add and start Michael Badgley instead.
Andrew has Tyler Lockett on his bench right now, but if the Seahawks receiver, who has been limited by a hamstring injury this week, is active, FleaFlicker currently suggests he start over Deebo Samuel.
Stephen leads all-time series 4-2
The AFL’s resident (trade) partners in crime face off this week in their only head-to-head matchup of the season. Stephen opens as a 24.5-point favorite in this contest and hopes to reach .500 for the first time this season after suffering three unlucky losses to open the year.
Alex will be missing Breece Hall, who Stephen shipped to him and was just beginning to regret getting rid of before the star Jets rookie tore his ACL.
Bye weeks won’t factor into this game and the only player currently in either starting lineup with an injury designation is Mark Andrews, who has an injured knee and could miss tonight’s game following a short week and an extremely limited role in Sunday’s win against Cleveland.
Stephen added Greg Dulcich through waivers on Thursday. The Broncos rookie tight end made his debut in Week 6 and has garnered 3 and 9 targets, respectively, in his first two NFL games. If Andrews sits tonight, Dulcich seems like a solid pivot for the 2020 AFL champ.
Current Coaching Risks
Alex currently has Taylor Heinicke and Eno Benjamin in his starting lineup, but FleaFlicker projections suggest Trevor Lawrence and David Montgomery would be the better options.
Stephen has no coaching risks based on his current lineup and current FleaFlicker projections.
Week 8 begins with the Ravens and the Buccaneers on Thursday night, an interesting matchup featuring several fantasy-relevant players and two teams who seem not to realize that the point of football is to have more points than your opponent after 60 minutes.
Good luck to everyone in Week 8!
