It’s a good thing I have these recaps to look forward to because, as you all will see, my fantasy team’s outlook isn’t so hot. My commissioner duties will certainly help to keep me invested through the rest of this long season.
After the first two weeks of this season both fell among the top five highest scoring weeks in AFL history, there was a slight lull in Week 3. Drew Brees and Matt Ryan put on a show in a shootout down in Atlanta, scoring 43.7 and 42.1 points respectively, but no other starting player in our league posted a total to join the top 40 at their position.
For their part, Drew Brees, owned by Sean Kennedy, joins the quarterbacks list with the 3rd highest single-game score our league has seen and Matt Ryan, owned by Andrew Perez, joins at number 6 on the list.
In fact, Brees also holds the number 2 spot from Week 8 of the 2015 season, when he scored 47.2 points for Nolan Soter, one of our former league members. That came in a shootout against the Giants where Eli Manning scored 39.9 points sitting on Anthony Battle’s bench. At least this time both quarterbacks were in their owners’ starting lineups.
William Battle was our top scorer this week and the only owner to post a top-75 single-game score. He totaled 146.0 points, good for 27th on the all-time team scoring list.
Sean was our third highest scorer with 126.1 points but lost his second game of the season. He fell just shy of the fifth highest losing score in league history. That spot still belongs to William, who scored 126.7 points in a losing effort in week 8 of last season.
In total, our 12 teams managed 1346.6 points this week, which is only the 14th highest scoring week in our league’s 71-week history. Despite that, our six losing teams had the fifth highest average losing score in our league’s history.
This week’s game of the week wasn’t all that exciting. Andrew received just four points from his kicker and defense combined, but still managed a 25-point margin of victory over Anthony, thanks in part to that large point total from Matt Ryan and nearly 26 points from Adrian Peterson.
Our defensive streamer of the week was William Massimini, who earned 17 points from the Chicago Bears defense. He won this distinction with the same defense last week. The Bears certainly have been a solid defense with the addition of Khalil Mack this season.
Our kicker streamer of the week was Danny Hatcher. He earned a league-high 13 points from the position by using New Orleans Saints kicker Wil Lutz.
We had two unlucky owners this week. Sean has already been mentioned with the third highest score of the week in a losing effort to our leading scorer, William. Additionally, Evan Ash had a 6-5 breakdown but lost to Stephen April, who earned his first win in our league with the second highest point total of the week.
On the flip side, this means we had two owners who were lucky to come away with wins this week. Danny tied for the 9th highest score of the week, or for the third lowest depending on how you prefer to look at it, but was facing Cory Puffett, who wound up with a 1-10 breakdown. Meanwhile, Brandon Saunders had a 4-7 breakdown but faced Adam Perez, this week’s lowest scorer.
Our coach of the week was William Battle. He earned 14.3 points by succeeding on one of two coaching risks. He earned 20.3 points by starting Robert Woods instead of Bilal Powell. Ironically, this is the exact same coaching risk that cost him six points and a win last week. William did lose out on 6 points this week by dropping the Panthers defense for the Broncos defense despite Denver having a lower projection on ESPN.
Our worst coach this week was Cory. He cost his team 8.4 points and a win by failing on one coaching risk. He started Keelan Cole instead of Cooper Kupp.
While costing your team a win takes the cake, we do have an honorable mention for worst coach of the week this week because Brandon cost his team 22.8 points on just one failed coaching risk. He went against ESPN projections by starting Chris Thompson instead of Carlos Hyde.
This week, William Battle becomes the first owner of the season to have four offensive players among the top five starters at their positions. Andrew and Stephen each had three such players while neither Cory nor William Massimini had a single offensive player crack those lists.

Game of the Week: Anthony Battle at Andrew Perez
Ant suffered from poor performances by Tom Brady and A.J. Green as Andrew took this win thanks to a resurgent Adrian Peterson and a great stat line by Matt Ryan in Atlanta’s shootout loss against New Orleans.
