Sam Martin became the 17th manager in AOA history to lose a matchup with just one all-play loss for the week. He was the second highest scorer, but fell to Cory Puffett when he league's commissioner notched his second straight Rickey Henderson Award.
Eric Meyer, meanwhile, recorded the AOA's 13th victory all-time as the second lowest scorer for the week, and he did it just one week after recording the league's 12th victory in the same scenario. Of interest, both of these extremely lucky wins came against one-win teams and by a combined margin of less than 6.5 points.
Players of the Week
Catcher - Cal Raleigh, 9.50 points (Stephen April)
1st Baseman - Matt Olson, 7.80 points (Cory Frontin)
2nd Baseman - Maikel Garcia, 6.20 points (Sam Martin)
3rd Baseman - Jose Ramirez, 11.30 points (Cory Frontin)
Shortstop - CJ Abrams, 11.90 points (Stephen April)
OF - Pete Crow-Armstrong, 12.30 points (Stephen April)
UTIL - Shohei Ohtani, 12.00 points (Sam Martin)
SP - Framber Valdez, 21.70 points (Cory Puffett)
RP - Lucas Erceg, 10.45 points (Eric Meyer)
The only repeat winner this week was Shohei Ohtani, who has won the Hal McRae Award three straight weeks for Sam.
Cal Raleigh has now won the Mike Piazza Award five times in the past seven weeks. Sean Kennedy is surely regretting letting him go back in Week 4.
Jose Ramirez won his second Wade Boggs Award of the year; his first came back in Week 2.
Likewhise, Framber Valdez and Lucas Erceg won their second Bobby Witt and Eric Gagne awards, respectively. Valdez last took home the Witt Award in Week 1 while playing for Sam Martin, who he faced and beat with Cory Puffett this week. Erceg's other Gagne Award came in Week 5.
All-time H2H: Series tied 1-1
Sean came into this matchup as the league’s leading scorer, and his team played like it in the early part of the week. His lead only briefly reached double digits, but he never trailed through the end of Friday, when his advantage was around 9 points.
Unfortunately for him, it all fell apart when Clayton Kershaw got rocked in his first game back from injury, giving up 5 runs over 4 innings while Zack Wheeler, Cal Raleigh, and Pete Crow-Armstrong helped Stephen’s squad generate a 22-poing swing before an abysmal Sunday on Sean’s part sealed the deal.
Stephen's top scorer: Pete Crow-Armstrong, 12.30 points (6 games)
Sean's top scorer: Joe Ryan, 11.40 points (1 start)
All-time H2H: Cory leads series 7-5
Cory's top scorer: Framber Valdez, 21.70 points (2 starts)
Sam's top scorer: Shohei Ohtani, 12.00 points (6 games)
All-time H2H: Rich leads series 2-0
Alex's top scorer: Jacob deGrom, 12.90 points (1 start)
Rich's top scorer: Tyler Mahle, 20.25 points (2 starts)
All-time H2H: Eric leads series 7-5-2
Cory's top scorer: Jose Ramirez, 11.30 points (6 games)
Eric's top scorer: Paul Skenes, 18.85 points (2 starts)
Cory and Sean swapped spots behind Rich and Stephen this week as Cory's hot streak continued.
Rich earned his 10th career #1 power ranking and seventh of the season.
Cory Frontin, meanwhile, is at the bottom of the power rankings for the 22nd time in his career, tied with Sean Kennedy for the most in AOA history.
