Eric is already the only manager in the AOA who has scored 100 points or more in both 7-day matchups we've played. The 2023 Scully Cup champion has shown pretty good consistency through the early season despite a 1-2 start.
This week he fell to the man he beat in that title matchup two seasons ago as Sean got his revenge, and his first victory of the campaign. This was the 16th time in league history the top two scorers of the week were facing each other head-to-head. Eric has been in six of those matchups and has gone 3-3 in them. This was Sean's first time being involved in such a contest.
Considering their two scores were by far the two highest team scores of the season so far, it's a bit surprising that the league averaged about 3 points per team less than we did a week ago. But that's what happens when just two teams reach 100 points compared to five a week ago.
Rich is the 29th manager to lead the league in scoring while playing in the game of the week. He got a narrow victory against Sam in the 8th game in league history to be decided by 1 point or less and the first since Week 15 of the 2023 season when Evan and Cory Frontin recorded the fourth tie in AOA history.
Players of the Week
Catcher - Cal Raleigh, 5.55 points (Sean Kennedy)
1st Baseman - Pete Alonso, 9.10 points (Eric Meyer)
2nd Baseman - Ozzie Albies, 8.75 points (Sean Kennedy)
3rd Baseman - Isaac Paredes, 9.55 points (Cory Puffett)
Shortstop - Bobby Witt Jr, 7.85 points (Sean Kennedy)
OF - James Wood, 11.95 points (Sam Martin)
UTIL - Kyle Schwarber, 9.65 points (Sean Kennedy)
SP - Hunter Greene, 25.75 points (Eric Meyer)
RP - Robert Suarez, 12.15 points (Sean Kennedy)
Cal Raleigh and Pete Alonso repeated as players of the week at their positions, claiming the Mike Piazza and Paul Goldschmidt awards, respectively. They are the first to win consecutive awards this season.
Kyle Schwarber and Robert Suarez won their second Hal McRae and Eric Gagne awards, respecitively, after claiming those awards in our season opener.
Cole Ragans had an impressive two-start week for Alex Mayo, racking up 22.35 points. It wasn't enough to earn the Bobby Witt Award, but he was the only 20 point scorer besides Greene this week.
All-time H2H: Series tied 2-2
Sam took a commanding lead after the first two days thanks in large part to his offensive generating three home runs and MacKenzie Gore and Framber Valdez putting up 9.5 and 9.6 points, respectively in their early-week starts.
Rich was playing catch-up the rest of the week. Fortunately for him, Sam’s offense only launched one more long ball the rest of the week and his team did just enough to get him back into striking distance entering the final day of the matchup. A disappointing second start for Gore on Sam’s side along with a gem from Garrett Crochet and a save from Andres Munoz in his first appearance of the season in Rich’s lineup completed the comeback.
Sam's top scorer: MacKenzie Gore, 12.50 points (2 starts)
Rich's top scorer: Garrett Crochet, 16.75 points (2 starts)
All-time H2H: Sean leads series 6-5
Eric's top scorer: Hunter Greene, 25.75 points (2 starts)
Sean's top scorer: Justin Steele, 12.30 points (1 start)
All-time H2H: Stephen leads series 3-1
Cory's top scorer: Brenton Doyle, 8.00 points (3 games)
Stephen's top scorer: Yoshinobu Yamamoto, 11.55 points (1 start)
All-time H2H: Cory leads series 8-2
Cory's top scorer: Logan Webb, 15.90 points (2 starts)
Alex's top scorer: Cole Ragans, 22.35 points (2 starts)
Rich remains atop this week's power rankings. This is his fifth time atop the AOA power rankings in his career and second of the year.
Cory Frontin fell to the bottom of the power rankings after recording the fourth lowest game score of the season and by far the lowest in a 7-day matchup. This is the 17th time in his career he's found himself at the bottom of the totem pole.
