We're down to our final three weeks of the regular season after a truly wild All-Star Break-shortened Week 17.
Cory Puffett barely outlasted Sean Kennedy to earn his 11th straight win and tie the AOA for wins by any team in a regular season. He, Sam Martin, and Evan Ash all won 15 games in 2021, and then Cory repeated the feat in 2022.
Sean now holds the title of unluckiest manager in the AOA this season. He now has four fewer wins than expected based on Top 4 scoring weeks, swapping placed with Sam who is now at three fewer wins than expected, thanks to his victory as the second lowest scoring manager for the week.
This was the 19th time in AOA history the top two scorers faced off in any week, the 14th time the two lowest scorers faced off, and the fifth time both anomalies occurred in the same week. It also happened back in Week 8 of this season, making this the first season in AOA history where this anomaly has happened multiple times.
Alex Mayo had another strong performance, recording his third consecutive week as the league's third highest scorer. Unfortunately, it's come too little too late as he was officially eliminated from postseason contention thanks to Sam's victory.
Heading into Week 18, Cory Puffett can clinch the AOA West win a win or tie, or if Rich Blorstad ties or loses to Sean.
Sam, meanwhile, can clinch the fourth and final playoff spot, with two weeks left to play in the season, if he wins, Sean loses to Alex, and Eric Meyer either ties or loses to Stephen April.
Players of the Week
Catcher - Salvador Perez, 7.40 points (Alex Mayo)
1st Baseman - Bryce Harper, 9.10 points (Alex Mayo)
2nd Baseman - Ozzie Albies, 5.90 points (Sean Kennedy)
3rd Baseman - Eugenio Suarez, 10.80 points (Alex Mayo)
Shortstop - Geraldo Perdomo, 5.15 points (Cory Puffett)
OF - Corbin Carroll, 6.25 points (Sean Kennedy)
UTIL - Kyle Schwarber, 6.85 points (Sean Kennedy)
SP - Luis Castillo, 11.80 points (Cory Frontin)
RP - Abner Uribe, 7.50 points (Cory Puffett)
Two players repeated their Player of the Week performance from Week 16 into the shortened, post-All Star break Week 17. Salvador Perez and Bryce Harper were phenominal for Alex Mayo again this week, finishing as the fourth- and second-highest scoring position players for the week.
The only non-pitcher to outscore both of them? Eugenio Suarez, also playing for Alex, who somehow managed to score double digits in just three games.
All-time H2H: Sam leads series tied 10-4
For the first time in league history, the Manny Ramirez Award goes to the second lowest scorer of the week. Sam’s team finished dead last in batting average and OPS, slugging just two homers in 106 AB. But the manager who entered the week with the worst schedule luck in the league finally caught a break.
Eric led the league in plate appearances, but he was the only manager who finished behind Sam in home runs and he had the fewest innings pitched and the worst pitcher metrics (ERA, WHIP, and FIP).
This was an absolute toilet bowl of a contest, but Sam will gladly take the win, the 14th time in league history, and the third time this year, the second lowest scoring team has won their matchup. Ironically, the first two such games this season were won by Eric.
Sam's top scorer: Andrew Abbott, 8.15 points (1 start)
Eric's top scorer: Brent Rooker, 4.45 points (3 games)
All-time H2H: Cory leads series 12-6
Cory's top scorer: Tarik Skubal, 10.40 points (1 start)
Sean's top scorer: Nick Pivetta, 10.15 points (1 start)
All-time H2H: Stephen leads series 4-2
Stephen's top scorer: Shota Imanaga, 11.55 points (1 start)
Alex's top scorer: Eugenio Suarez, 10.80 points (3 games)
All-time H2H: Rich leads series 3-1
Cory's top scorer: Luis Castillo, 11.80 points (1 start)
Rich's top scorer: Garrett Crochet, 9.25 points (1 start)
We had no movement in this week's power rankings.
Cory Puffett leads the power rankings for an AOA-record 46th time.
Cory Frontin, meanwhile, is at the bottom of the power rankings for the 31st time in his career.
