For the 18th time in AOA history, and the fourth time this season, we had no lucky winners or unlucky losers. The top four scoring teams all won their matchups.
Cory Puffett led the way this time around, beating Cory Frontin for the 15th time in their 17 career matchups. He won by 78.35 points, thanks to Frontin being the lowest scorer of the week. It's the 13th time in league history a matchup has featured the highest and lowest scorers for the week.
Eric Meyer had a really strong hitting week, finishing just behind the second highest offensive score of the week with an impressive .291 batting average and an OPS over .850. He wasted the opportunity to snap his losing streak, however, by becoming the first manager in AOA history to have his team record less than 10 innings pitched in a matchup. With just 7 innings pitched across one start and three relief appearances, a terrible 6.43 ERA and an equally-bad 1.429 WHIP, Eric is quickly playing himself out of playoff contention with Sean and Sam both outperforming him of late.
Players of the Week
Catcher - Cal Raleigh, 8.70 points (Stephen April)
1st Baseman - Matt Olson, 6.90 points (Cory Frontin)
2nd Baseman - Ketel Marte, 9.45 points (Stephen April)
3rd Baseman - Max Muncy, 9.65 points (Rich Blorstad)
Shortstop - Elly De La Cruz, 9.40 points (Eric Meyer)
OF - Juan Soto, 11.70 points (Stephen April)
UTIL - Shohei Ohtani, 9.60 points (Sam Martin)
SP - Spencer Schwellenbach, 23.10 points (Stephen April)
RP - Josh Hader, 16.30 points (Alex Mayo)
Cal Raleigh had another strong week to take home yet another Mike Piazza Award, just barely holding off Willson Contreras for the award by a tenth of a point.
Ketel Marte took home his second straight Ryne Sandberg Award and his third in four weeks. The last six 2B awards have been split between him and Jose Altuve.
Spencer Schwellenbach was the top starting pitcher for the second time in his AOA career. The first time came in Week 2 while on Sean Kennedy's roster. This week, he recorded the third highest single-week score of any player in the AOA this season. Schwellenbach joins Raleigh in players Sean once had but are not producing at a high level on Stephen April's team.
All-time H2H: Series tied 3-3
The last blowout game of the week saw Rich on the losing end. He flipped the script this time around and outperformed Sean on both sides of the ball.
Sean’s offense struggled, with his squad’s batting average coming in 20 points below Rich’s Dredgers. But that only tells a small part of the story. Rich got 23 extra base hits, including a pair of triples, while Sean received just 13 XBH, most of them doubles.
With an offensive advantage of more than 20 points, it would have taken a huge pitching week for Sean to make up that ground. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Four of his pitchers turned in excellent starts, but Nate Eovaldi and Jameson Taillon combined for just 1.05 points across their three combined starts, allowing Rich to end the week with an 8-point advantage in that department, as well.
Sean's top scorer: Nick Pivetta, 12.90 points (1 start)
Rich's top scorer: Ranger Suarez, 20.90 points (2 starts)
All-time H2H: Cory P leads series 15-2
Cory P's top scorer: Framber Valdez, 19.80 points (2 starts)
Cory F's top scorer: Luis Castillo, 9.90 points (2 starts)
All-time H2H: Stephen leads series 5-1
Eric's top scorer: Bryan Reynolds, 10.15 points (6 games)
Stephen's top scorer: Spencer Schwellenbach, 23.10 points (2 starts)
All-time H2H: Sam leads series 12-1
Alex's top scorer: Josh Hader, 16.30 points (4 relief appearances)
Sam's top scorer: Bryan Woo, 18.50 points (2 starts)
A much-needed victory helped Sam leapfrog Sean to take a Top 4 spot in this week's power rankings. We look to be in for a dogfight down the stretch for the last playoff spot.
Cory Puffett leads the power rankings for an AOA-record 43rd time.
Cory Frontin, meanwhile, is at the bottom of the power rankings for the 28th time in his career.
