Cory Puffett continued his dominant run through the middle third of the campaign, extending his winning streak to six games with his second double in a row.
Eric Meyer has used four or fewer pitcher starts in four straight weeks, which may explain why he has lost three games in that stretch. To his credit, his pitching staff gave up no earned runs this week. It is the second time in AOA history a manager has gone a full contest without giving one up and with 15 innings pitched, Eric broke Cory Frontin's record of 14 innings pitched with a 0.00 ERA week. Ironically, it was Cory himself who took advantage of Eric's low-volume pitching week to snag a victory this time around.
Though we still have 40% of the season left to play, the playoff picture is beginning to take shape and three managers appear to be running away from the field. Cory Puffett has two games on Stephen April and Rich Blorstad while the two of them have two games on the rest of the field.
Eric, Sean Kennedy, and Sam Martin are in a three-way dog fight for the last remaining playoff spot. And while they're both longshots, Cory Frontin and Alex Mayo are both coming off victories this week so neither can be fully counted out just yet.
Players of the Week
Catcher - Hunter Goodman, 6.50 points (Cory Puffett)
1st Baseman - Matt Olson, 8.15 points (Cory Frontin)
2nd Baseman - Jose Altuve, 9.75 points (Cory Frontin)
3rd Baseman - Eugenio Suarez, 7.55 points (Alex Mayo)
Shortstop - Elly De La Cruz, 14.75 points (Eric Meyer)
OF - Ronald Acuna Jr., 15.50 points (Cory Puffett)
UTIL - Ian Happ, 10.65 points (Stephen April)
SP - Zack Wheeler, 20.00 points (Stephen April)
RP - Abner Uribe, 12.90 points (Cory Puffett)
While Hunter Goodman took a significant step back this week after earning Week 11's Mike Piazza Award, his Week 12 performance was still just a bit better than the field, earning him repeat honors for Cory.
Ian Happ and Abner Uribe are both first-time weekly award winners while Ronald Acuna Jr., after havina slow start to 2024 and then an injury that kept him out until just a couple weeks ago, earned his first Mike Trout Award since Week 13 of the 2023 campaign.
All-time H2H: Cory leads series 2-1
After Wednesday came to a close with Stephen holding an advantage of nearly 40 points, Cory no doubt thought his five-game winning streak was destined to end. When two of Cory’s three starting pitchers on Thursday turned in sub-par outings, the writing on the wall appeared to be in permanent ink.
But the comeback was on, and Cory won days four, five, and six of the matchup by enough that Stephen’s 12-point advantage on Sunday was not enough to take back the lead. For the second week in a row, Cory earned both the Manny Ramirez and Rickey Henderson awards.
With Stephen finishing second in the league in scoring for the week, this marks the 18th time in AOA history the top two scorers faced off, and the eighth of those times it has come in the Game of the Week.
Cory's top scorer: Ronald Acuna Jr., 15.50 points (6 games)
Stephen's top scorer: Zack Wheeler, 20.00 points (2 starts)
All-time H2H: Rich leads series 2-1
Rich's top scorer: Ranger Suarez, 12.00 points (1 start)
Alex's top scorer: Josh Hader, 11.65 points (3 relief appearances)
All-time H2H: Sam leads series 9-3
Sam's top scorer: MacKenzie Gore, 14.40 points (2 starts)
Sean's top scorer: Nick Pivetta, 11.60 points (1 start)
All-time H2H: Eric leads series 7-6-2
Eric's top scorer: Elly De La Cruz, 14.75 points (6 games)
Cory's top scorer: Jose Altuve, 9.75 points (6 games)
We had no movement in this week's power rankings for the first time since Week 10. This is Cory's AOA-record 41st time leading the league's power rankings.
Cory Frontin, meanwhile, is at the bottom of the power rankings for the 26th time in his career.
