At the end of this week's write-up, I have a mid-season statistical report of the best and worst in each statistical category this season.
Players of the Week
Catcher - David Fry, 15.25 points (Sam Martin)
1st Baseman - Freddie Freeman, 16.00 points (Rich Blorstad)
2nd Baseman - Ketel Marte, 11.75 points (Stephen April)
3rd Baseman - Jose Ramirez, 13.75 points (Stephen April)
Shortstop - Gunnar Henderson, 12.50 points (Stephen April)
OF - Juan Soto, 19.50 points (Andrew Perez)
UTIL - Christian Yelich, 12.75 points (Sean Kennedy)
SP - Luis Castillo, 23.50 points (Rich Blorstad)
RP - Hunter Harvey, 16.00 points (Andrew Perez)
This was the fourth straight week Jose Ramirez was the highest scoring third baseman, breaking his previous high of three straight. If he can do it again next week, he will tie Austin Riley's run from Week 12 through Week 16 of the 2022 season.
Juan Soto ended a three-week streak for Aaron Judge as the highest scoring outfielders. Judge finished this week second among outfielders with 17.50 points.
Luis Castillo was the only starting pitcher, or player for that matter, to reach 20 points this week.
All-time H2H: Sam leads series 6-2
Led by another strong week by Aaron Judge, a monster week for David Fry, and five double-digit outings by starting pitchers, Sam made pretty easy work of Sean's Marauders in this one.
Sean has been sputtering lately, finishing among the bottom five scorers three times in the last four weeks. Despite this recent downward trend, he remains undefeated against every AOA opponent he's faced other than Sam.
For a second straight week, Sam led all teams in home runs. This time he was the only manager to get at least 10 dingers from his lineup, which helped him lead the league in OPS and RBI for the week. His 43 runs batted in ranks 26th in league history for a 7-day matchup and is the most for such a matchup this season.
As impressive as the 23-point advantage those numbers gave Sam in the offensive department was, he had an even bigger 32-point advantage from his pitching staff.
Four of Sean's seven pitcher starts resulted in fewer than 5 points being scored, while five of Sam's seven pitcher starts netted his Airlanders at least 10 points. Quite a week for the league's scoring leader through the first half of the season.
All-time H2H: Rich leads series 2-0
In an even less exciting matchup, Rich joined his Week 10 opponent in improving to 2-0 on the season against his Week 9 opponent.
Ironically, this matchup featured the two highest scoring players of the week on opposite sides of the coin. Rich had the league's only 20-point scorer in Luis Castillo, who put together two quality starts and allowed just 2 earned runs across 13 innings in Week 9. Meanwhile Andrew had the league's highest scoring outfielder, Juan Soto, who came just half a point shy of joining Castillo in reaching the 20-point threshold.
Andrew also boasted the league's top reliever of the week and a terrific early-week start from Joe Ryan that was unfortunately undermined by a very poor second outing on Saturday. But he didn't do those three strong performances any favors by only using eight other players total for the week. In fact, only six hitters played in a single game this week for Andrew.
Rich, meanwhile, enjoyed the best batting average any team put together this week, a big part of his league-leading 34 runs scored.
All-time H2H: Cory leads series 7-2
Cory's 268 plate appearances this week were the second most any team has had this season, behind only his Week 8 total of 283. How much that helped is certainly up for debate. While he certainly got a lot of volume opportunities, his hitters didn't take full advantage. His team had the worst batting average of the week and by far the most strikeouts with 68, more than double his opponent.
Because of that, Alex overcame that 32-plate appearance deficit to ouscore Cory by 20 points on offense. He was helped by George Springer, who led his team with 16.50 points as the third highest scoring outfielder of the week.
The dagger for Alex was pitching. Cory used seven different starting pitchers and five of them reached double digits; two of the four relievers he used joined them. Cory had 21 more innings of volume and logged better ERA, WHIP, and FIP metrics. In all, Cory's pitchers outscored Alex's 94.75 points to 48.75, more than making up for his offensive deficiency.
All-time H2H: Stephen leads series 2-0
Eric finally showed up this week with some lineup adjustments. This was the first time all season he maxed out his pitcher starts; in fact, he'd only come within one of the max once prior to this week. He nearly hit 200 plate appearances for the first time since Week 3, he tied his season high for innings pitched, and his team enjoyed its best batting average and OPS since Week 1.
Unfortunately he came up just a bit short of notching his first win of the season. But this was without a doubt the best week he's had this season. It was the first time he finished among the top five scorers, making this an unlucky loss for him, something I honestly wasn't sure we'd see. Hopefully this will give him some confidence that he can compete and maybe make things a bit interesting in the second half of the season.
Stephen, meanwhile, continued his recent tear. He's been a top 5 scorer four times in the last five weeks. While this week was disappointing in terms of his point total compared to his last two weeks, he's certainly got something to hang his hat on this week.
For the first time all season, if the season were to end today, Stephen would be squarely in the playoffs without any need to consider tiebreakers.
As a fun side note: Both managers' top scoring players this week are named Tanner. Bibee led Eric's team with 14.25 points while Houck led Stephen's squad with 14.75 points.
All-time H2H: Evan leads series 4-3-1
For the second straight week, and the third time this season, Cory enjoyed a lucky win. Back in Week 1 he got a victory as the second lowest scorer, this week he won as the third lowest scorer, and last week he won as the fourth lowest scorer.
No matter, with Sean's loss to Sam, Cory is now tied for the best record in the league! This week he was the beneficiary of a strong Wednesday start by Corbin Burnes and a terrible week for Evan Ash, who had just two 10-point scorers on his team.
Evan managed a narrow advantage on the offensive side thanks to a batting average 22 points higher than Cory's and an OPS 46 points higher. He gave up that advantage and more on the pitching side with a 16-inning deficit and a higher ERA, though he did best Cory in the WHIP and FIP departments.
Game of the Week: Sean Kennedy vs Sam Martin
In a matchup between a manager tied for the most lucky wins entering Week 9 and the manager with the most unlucky losses entering Week 9, the latter took matters into his own hands and made his own luck.
Â
Sam leads the league in scoring, but he entered the week three games behind his opponent. It would have been a four-game deficit if he hadn’t already beaten Sean earlier this season. Back in Week 3 he earned a narrow 7.5-point victory against his division rival. This time he enjoyed a much more comfortable margin of victory as he took control of the matchup on Friday and never looked back, winning each of the last four days of the contest.
