Sorry to say I don't have as much to say leading into this week. Offensive scoring seems to have exploded in recent weeks as pitchers have struggled across the board.
Let's jump right into this week's players of the week.
Players of the Week
Catcher - Salvador Perez, 10.25 points (Cory Puffett)
1st Baseman - Bryce Harper, 10.00 points (Andrew Perez)
2nd Baseman - Ketel Marte, 16.25 points (Stephen April)
3rd Baseman - Elly De La Cruz, 13.00 points (Sean kennedy)
Shortstop - Trea Turner, 19.00 points (Rich Blorstad)
OF - Brent Rooker, 20.75 points (Cory Puffett)
UTIL - Marcell Ozuna, 13.25 points (Sam Martin)
SP - Chris Sale, 20.50 points (Alex Mayo)
RP - Ronel Blanco, 17.75 points (Evan Ash)
Salvador Perez gave Cory a massive advantage over the rest of the league at catcher. The next highest scoring catcher was Will Smith with just 3.00 points, less than 30% of Perez's weekly total.
It's not common for the top individual scorer for any week to be a position player, but that was the case this week as Brent Rooker narrowly beat out Chris Sale with a week-high of 20.75 points.
For the second time this season, Ronel Blanco claimed the Eric Gagne Award, though he started both of his appearances. The top two scoring true relievers this week were David Robertson (16.25 points) and Jhoan Duran (12.50 points), both for Eric Meyer. Duran took a loss on Sunday, or he may have been able to snatch away the Gagne Award from Blanco.
All-time H2H: Cory leads series 6-5
Cory just keeps on winning. While his team hasn't reached the same level of dominance, this run is reminiscent of his 2022 campaign, when his team started 5-5 before he won his last 10 games of the regular season and went on to capture his second league title in as many years.
He's now won eight straight this year, including six against his division mates. After his last loss, he found himself in last place in the AOA West, four games behind the division leader. Now he's tied with Sean Kennedy atop the division with three games to play.
After a few weeks' reprieve, Sam got another taste of bad luck this week. He finished just within the Top 5 in scoring but lost, making this his fifth unlucky loss in 2024. At 2 WBE by median scoring and 1.0 WBE by breakdown, he's either tied for second or third in terms of having the worst luck in the league this year.
With the victory, Cory earned his second straight Manny Ramirez Award and his fourth in five weeks. He is now 4-1 when playing in the game of the week this season while Sam is 2-3, including 0-2 against Cory.
As far as their careers go, Cory now has a league-high 19 Manny Ramirez Awards and is 19-8 when he appears in the game of the week. Sam falls to 17-11.
Sam's top scorer: Francisco Lindor, 17.25 points (7 games)
Cory's top scorer: Brent Rooker, 20.75 points (6 games)
All-time H2H: Andrew leads series 7-4
We may have to wait for a stat correction before locking in Sean as this week's Rickey Henderson Award winner, but assuming he holds onto it this will be his third this season and, in fact, of his career. Assuming that's the case, this is also the 11th time in league history the highest and lowest scorers have been matched up against one another and just the second time this season it's happened.
This was a pretty big week for Sean. He never trailed at the end of any day as he snapped a three-game losing streak to hold onto a share of first place in the AOA West.
He'll enjoy another should-be easy win in his next matchup as he'll face the only manager in the AOA with a worse record than Andrew before he closes the season by facing the managers currently tied with him and one game behind in the division race.
Andrew's top scorer: Marcus Semien, 14.75 points (6 games)
Sean's top scorer: Logan Gilbert, 14.25 points (1 start)
All-time H2H: Rich leads series 1-0
In a game that was much tighter than anybody would have expected, Eric nearly pulled off consecutive wins for the first time this season. In fact, if it weren't for a catastrophic fifth inning for Yusei Kikuchi and a triple allowed by Jhoan Duran that tagged him with the loss, he might have pulled it out.
Instead, Rich held on in a game even closer than the final score already indicates and is now back above .500 and keeping his playoff hopes alive. In fact, a beneficial stat correction could even give him his second straight Rickey Henderson Award and third of the season.
Eric's top scorer: David Robertson, 16.25 points (3 relief appearances)
Rich's top scorer: Trea Turner, 19.00 points (6 games)
All-time H2H: Stephen leads series 2-1
Alex was very much in contention as we entered the final day of his matchup against Stephen. Trailing by less than 10 points, he wound up outscoring Stephen with his pitching on Sunday despite Stephen having two relief appearances to his zero and each having just one starting pitcher.
Unfortunately for Alex, his hitters totally disappeared. Actually, it would have been better if they'd literally disappeared. With George Springer's 1.25 points representing a high score for his batters on Sunday, Alex lost 2.50 points from hitting stats on the final day, allowing Stephen to build a more comfortable winning margin.
The one good piece of news for Alex is that after a likely challenging matchup against Sam Martin during this upcoming 10-day matchup, he'll get to face Eric Meyer and Andrew Perez, owners of the two worst records in the league, to close out the regular season.
Alex's top scorer: Chris Sale, 20.50 points (2 starts)
Stephen's top scorer: Mitch Keller, 16.75 points (2 starts)
All-time H2H: Series tied 4-4-1
One of four managers with fewer than 100 points this week, Cory came away with his league-leading fifth lucky win of the season. Sitting at 3 WAE according to median scoring and 2.8 WAE by breakdown, he has been far and away the luckest manager in 2024 entering the final three weeks of the season.
Even so, he's now just one win shy of tying his career high from two seasons ago. He'll have a chance to get that 11th win next week against Andrew Perez before closing his season with a couple tough matchups against playoff hopefuls.
Evan was in range of getting his sixth win of the season, but once again a lack of attention was his undoing. He left a pitcher start on the table, he left Mitch Haniger in his lincup all week despite playing just two games, and he continues to leave Kyle Tucker in his lineup while he's been sat on the IL since early June.
Evan's top scorer: Ronel Blanco, 17.75 points (2 starts)
Cory's top scorer: Framber Valdez, 15.50 points (1 start)
Game of the Week: Sam Martin vs Cory Puffett
With four end-of-day lead changes after Cory took the initial lead on Monday, this was a battle deserving of the label.
Â
They finished first and second in home runs and in total extra base hits but Cory still managed to build enough of an offensive advantage to overcome a 9-point pitching deficit.
A week after falling out of the top spot, Stephen is back at #1 in this week's power rankings. It's the sixth time this season he's been in this position, which means he has the third most in league history.
Andrew remains in the cellar this week. It's the 15th time in his career he has been at the bottom of our power rankings, just one behind Cory Frontin for the second most in AOA history.
